Roving Listeners

Roving Listeners engage neighbors in under resourced communities by listening to their stories to discover their gifts, talents and passions. These neighbors are connected with others inside and outside of the community to fully utilize their talents and realize their dreams. The Roving Listeners process helps people find ways to best utilize their own strengths to build community, friendship, equity, grow the local economy and create “mutual delight”.

This will take time, possibly a lifetime. Getting to know those who look different from us will bring about healing and the realization that we have more in common than differences. It is empowering for residents to be heard, to be seen and to be visible. We are working closely with non-profits, churches and community organizations in Greenville to develop our own Roving Listeners program.

GREENVILLE, SC

Why use the Roving Listener Approach?

Other programs look at the needs and deficits of a neighborhood and often seek to provide solutions from outside the community. Roving Listeners build relationships inside the neighborhood, working from the inside out and uses local community resources first. This approach builds agency within the neighborhood and is much more likely to meet the real needs of the people in the neighborhood.

Does Roving Listeners Work?

This is a model with proven success. Roving Listeners is rooted in Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) Principles. 15 years ago DeAmon Harges (The Original Roving Listener) founded The Learning Tree. His efforts have significantly impacted neighborhoods in Indianapolis, Kansas City, Macon, Savannah and the neighborhood of Cultivate South Park in Seattle.

Gifts of Listeners are those who enjoy hearing stories and love people. This involves a lot of sticky notes with names and gifts that are passed along to connectors.

Gifts of Connectors are those who know a lot of people inside and outside of their community, who naturally share discovered gifts, talents, and passions of residents
to those who share the same passions.

Gifts of the Celebrators are those who love to throw a party. They invite residents, connectors, and listeners to celebrate a meal together. Sharing stories and connecting with others builds friendship.

Tracey Mulvaney, Director
There are just some people we come across in life who are the embodiment of service to others.  They share everything they have and put all of their energy into making good things great!

We are blessed when we meet these people and are inspired by them to give more of ourselves. One of these angels on earth is Tracey Mulvaney. If you haven’t met Tracey, put it on your bucket list!

Tracey, a founding member of Ekklesia and integral in its growth, felt led to bring more people together-people who might not normally cross paths-and to bring out each ones gifts and celebrate them. She now works diligently to define her ministry and its role in the form of Asset Based Community Development–using the gifts and talents already existing in a neighborhood to build it up and create positive change that benefits the whole community.

Ekklesia hopes you, too, will be inspired on your own path to God, and if you’d like to be a ROVING LISTENER, too, let us know.

"The choice to accept myself as I am: human, imperfect. To be useful, to be used up, to survive and to thrive so I can use every moment to make the world a better place."
